What Spot Ventilation Is

Spot ventilation is local exhaust: a fan that captures air where steam, grease, or fumes form and sends that air outdoors through a duct. It is not the same as opening a window, running a whole-house fan, or recirculating a microwave filter. Recirculating units clean some particles but do not remove humidity. A properly sized, ducted bath fan that runs during and after showers is the right tool for humidity. Windows help in mild weather but are a poor winter strategy in Chicago.
