A three-prong adapter (often called a cheater plug) lets a grounded three-prong plug fit a two-slot receptacle. It does not create a real equipment ground by itself. In older Chicago homes with two-slot outlets, that adapter can hide a missing ground path and leave shock and fire risk in place.

That bond only helps if the box and wiring path are already grounded metal and properly bonded. Many two-slot installations are not.

If there is no equipment grounding conductor and no bonded metal path, the adapter simply lets you plug in. Fault current that should travel on a ground wire may instead seek a path through a person, a pipe, or a damaged appliance chassis.

Why Older Chicago Homes Still Have Two-Slot Outlets

Pre-grounding-era branch wiring is common in bungalows, two-flats, and remodeled apartments. Outlets were never designed for three-prong tools, computers, and kitchen appliances that expect a ground reference. Remodel paint and new cover plates do not upgrade the wiring behind the device.

Is a Three-Prong Adapter Safe?

As a permanent solution: no. As a rare, temporary convenience on a known grounded metal box with a verified bond: still a weak practice compared with replacing the receptacle correctly. Most homeowner use is neither verified nor temporary.

Adapters are especially risky with appliances that have metal cases, outdoor tools, space heaters, and anything used near sinks or damp basements. A GFCI outlet or breaker can reduce shock risk on an ungrounded circuit when installed and labeled correctly, but it is not the same as a hardwired equipment ground for all fault types.

Bootleg grounds (neutral bonded to the ground hole at the receptacle) can fool plug testers and still leave dangerous voltage on metal parts during neutral faults. That hack is not a substitute for a real equipment grounding conductor and should be removed when found.

Never remove the ground pin from a three-prong cord to force a fit. That destroys the appliance ground path permanently.

Safer Alternatives to Cheater Plugs

Best fix: run or confirm an equipment grounding conductor and install a grounded receptacle where the wiring supports it. That may mean a new home run from the panel in older Chicago walls.

Where code and listing allow, a GFCI receptacle (or GFCI breaker protection) can protect people on some ungrounded circuits when the face is marked that no equipment ground is present. An electrician chooses the listed method after testing what is actually in the box.

Rewiring a kitchen, bath, laundry, or finished basement often replaces two-slot devices as part of the project rather than adapting every plug forever. Panel and circuit capacity still matter if you are adding loads at the same time.

List which rooms still have two-slot faces and which appliances you force-fit daily. Stop using cheaters for heaters, window AC, and shop tools. Keep kids from stacking adapters and power strips on ungrounded receptacles.

Schedule a receptacle and grounding survey if you bought an older Chicago home and never had the outlets opened. Do not paint over cracked faces or ignore warm plugs.
