Electrical outlet installation Chicago work is adding or relocating receptacles and switches so a room can take the load you actually use. STS Electric pulls, boxes, and tests that work from 939 W North Ave #746. Call (773) 721-1111 with the room, the device count, and photos of the existing plate.
We add or relocate devices. A dead, loose, hot, or sparking receptacle is electrical repair service. Dimmer, smart, and 3-way types are covered in light switch types. After-hours smoke or a dark house is 24/7 emergency work. Call (773) 721-1111.
What Outlet and Switch Installation Includes
An install visit is not a plate swap. We check the circuit, the box, and the load, then add or move the device so the new location is legal to energize.
Typical scope:
- New receptacles on an existing circuit that still has capacity
- Relocating an outlet or switch when furniture, a TV wall, or a remodel moves the use
- USB and USB-C receptacles in a box that can take the device
- 20A kitchen and laundry receptacles where the circuit is 20A
- Weather-resistant exterior receptacles with in-use covers
- Switch install and relocate on an existing lighting circuit
Like-for-like replacement of a failed device is repair. If the plate is cracked and the circuit is otherwise fine, that is repair, not a new install.
Who Needs Electrical Outlet Installation in Chicago
Chicago bungalows, two-flats, and condos were often wired for a lamp and a radio. Desks, TVs, and counter appliances now sit where there is no receptacle, or the only receptacle is behind a sofa.
Call for install work when you are:
- Adding a desk, TV wall, or island and the cord will not reach
- Finishing a basement or converting a porch
- Putting a 20A receptacle on a kitchen counter that still has 15A devices
- Adding a garage, patio, or roof-deck receptacle
- Moving a switch that landed behind a new door swing
If the panel is full or the main is 60 or 100 amps and you are adding a 240V dryer or range, start with electrical service upgrade. That is not outlet installation.
GFCI Outlet Installation
GFCI outlet installation is the wet-location part of this service. We install GFCI receptacles where water and electricity can meet: kitchens, baths, garages, unfinished basements, laundry, and exteriors.
A GFCI on a two-prong circuit is not a grounded outlet. It can protect people. It does not create an equipment ground. Ungrounded Chicago stock, cheater plugs, and two-slot plates are covered in two-prong outlet replacement. Kitchen and bath spacing next to sinks is covered in outlets near water.
We will not install a GFCI as a workaround for a warm or buzzing receptacle. Heat and smell are repair or emergency, not a device upgrade.
USB, 20A, and 240V Receptacles
USB receptacles belong in a box with room and a circuit that is not already at its limit. We will not force a USB device into a plaster box that is already at fill.
20A receptacles on kitchen counters need a 20A circuit and 12 AWG. Putting a 20A face on 14 AWG is not an upgrade. We check the breaker and the conductor before we change the device.
240V dryer, range, and shop receptacles are a new circuit in most Chicago houses. That is install work only when the panel can take the breaker. If the service is the limit, that is a service upgrade, not an outlet add.
Relocate vs New Circuit
Relocate means the same circuit, a new box, and a legal fill count. New circuit means a homerun to the panel.
Chicago plaster and conduit make both slower than a suburban remodel. Boxes are shallow. Shared two-flat walls hide the neighbor’s pipe. We open what we need, we do not chase a hidden run through finished plaster because a YouTube video said it was easy.
Same-circuit add or relocate
- Confirm load on the existing breaker
- Set a new box, extend in conduit or listed cable as the house requires
- Device, cover, and a function test
New homerun
- Spare breaker space, conductor size, and a permitted path
- 240V and new kitchen small-appliance circuits usually land here
If the only path is through finished rooms you did not plan to open, we will say so before we cut.
Exterior Outlets
Year-round exterior work is a weather-resistant receptacle, GFCI protection, and an in-use cover that stays closed with a cord plugged in. Roof decks, gangways, and brick walls in older Chicago buildings need a listed box, not a indoor device with a plastic bubble.
Seasonal holiday lighting, timers, and dedicated display circuits are exterior holiday lighting outlet installation. Ice-melt and roof circuits are a different job.
Chicago Permits and Inspection
A new receptacle on an existing circuit that is not overloaded can go through Chicago Express Permit as repair or alteration of devices on existing circuits. A new homerun, a 240V receptacle, or work that changes load beyond the existing circuit is a different permit path.
We pull the permit when the scope requires it. The City inspects before final energizing on permitted work. We follow Chicago code on the job.
Do not skip the permit to save a visit. A failed sale inspection costs more than the permit.
How the Visit Works
- You send the address, the room, and a photo of the existing plate and panel directory if you have it
- We check load, box fill, and whether the job is a same-circuit add or a homerun
- We set the box, pull, terminate, and test
- If a permit is in play, we meet the inspector or leave the site ready for that visit
Trucks run from 939 W North Ave #746. Typical jobs are North Side bungalows, West Side two-flats, and close-in Cook County houses on the same ComEd network. Call (773) 721-1111 to book.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as electrical outlet installation vs repair?
Installation is a new device or a move to a new location. Repair is a dead, loose, hot, or damaged receptacle on the same box. Warm plates and burning smell are a repair or emergency. We will not quote an install price for a fire-risk repair.
Do I need a permit to add an outlet in Chicago?
A new receptacle on an existing circuit that still has capacity can use Express Permit. A new circuit or a 240V receptacle is a different path. We file when the scope requires it and we quote the permit fee after we see the scope.
Can you install a GFCI on two-prong wiring?
Yes, as personnel protection, not as a fake ground. The plate should be marked so the next electrician and the inspector see it. Full grounding is a two-prong replacement job, not a GFCI swap.
USB vs a 20A kitchen outlet?
USB is a convenience device in a box that can take it. A 20A kitchen receptacle is a circuit and conductor question. They are not interchangeable. Tell us which problem you actually have.
Can you relocate a switch without opening the whole wall?
Sometimes, when the run is in conduit or an accessible cavity. Plaster and lath Chicago walls often need a cut. We will not promise a no-cut relocate from a photo.
Do exterior outlets need GFCI?
Yes. Weather-resistant devices, GFCI, and an in-use cover. Holiday display circuits are a different job.
