Dunning is one of Chicago’s 77 officially designated communities. Located on the northwest side of the city, Dunning neighborhoods include Belmont Heights, Belmont Terrace, Dunning, Irving Woods, and Schorsch Village. Many residents are police officers and firefighters. One-third of the population is of Polish descent.
In 1851, Dunning was a remote prairie area that seemed well-suited for Cook County’s proposed poor farm, potter’s field and insane asylum. The poor farm buildings included a school and were constructed on top of a ridge.
Most residents were families who had fallen on hard times. At the poor farm, they could grow food and wash their clothing. A separate building for the insane asylum was constructed in 1870. Two more buildings were later added to accommodate 1,000 patients.
Around 1875, Andrew Dunning bought a large parcel of land adjacent to the county property on which to establish a village. Unfortunately, many potential settlers were scared off by the insane asylum and decided to settle elsewhere.
Transportation wasn’t the best, either. Train service from the city terminated almost three miles from the poor farm, asylum and Dunning’s settlement. Finally, a “crazy train” was constructed to carry people and supplies from the depot to the county buildings and the nearby village.
In 1886, the insane asylum was closed after an investigation and the resulting scandal revealed gross negligence by staff that included gambling on the job. In 1910, the poor farm was relocated to Oak Forest.
