Our Lincoln Square neighborhood ranks number 26 on Niche.com’s list of best Chicago neighborhoods. It’s an active, family-friendly area that comprises the smaller neighborhoods of Budlong Woods, Lincoln Square, Ravenswood Gardens, and Bowmanville. A cobblestone stretch of Lincoln Avenue, eateries, beer halls, and other shops reflect the German origins of the first settlers in the area, but other cultures also have influenced the neighborhood.
German settlers established farms in the area in the 1840s. The Budlong Woods neighborhood takes its name from the first two settlers in the area. The Budlong brothers, Lyman and Joseph, took advantage of the ongoing farming to open commercial pickling operation in 1857. After Rosehill Cemetery opened, the brothers also established commercial flower fields and a greenhouse.
The area wasn’t named Lincoln Square until 1925 when the Chicago City Council selected the name in honor of President Abraham Lincoln.

Well-known bluegrass, folk, jazz, blues, country, and world music artists from around the world perform live at the Old Town School of Folk Music. The artists who have performed at the school include Pete Seeger and Mahalia Jackson. Roger McGuinn achieved fame with The Byrds following an early association with the school.
