Martin Kimbell was one of the early settlers that developed this community originally back in the 1830s. The community started out around the towns of Avendale, Maplewood, and Jefferson. However, in 1889, this area was annexed into the City of Chicago and renamed Logan Square. The Logan Square community initially contained many Scandinavian or English inhabitants. Most of the Scandinavian residents were Danes or Norwegians. However, a sizable Jewish and Polish population also moved into the Logan Square community.
