Albany Park is located on Chicago’s northwest side along the banks of the North Branch of the Chicago River. The Albany Park area also includes Ravenswood Manor, Mayfair, and North Mayfair. Not only is Albany Park one of the most culturally rich and diverse neighborhoods in Chicago, it also is one of the most culturally rich and diverse areas in the United States. Among Chicago’s neighborhoods, Albany Park has one of the highest percentages of foreign-born residents. That diversity distinguishes Albany Park from most Chicago neighborhoods where the ethnicity of residents is more uniform.
In addition to diversity, the historic architecture of North Mayfair has earned that entire neighborhood a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2010, This Old House Magazine selected North Mayfair as one of the best Old House communities in the United States.
At STS Electric we offer all the diverse commercial and residential electrical services needed by the Albany Park community, including complete rewiring, electric panel installation, service upgrades, wiring remodeling projects, smart home integration, and safety inspections.
The History of Albany Park
Albany Park’s history mirrors the story of Chicago’s growth.
As Chicago’s downtown population became increasingly dense, a group of investors, which included DeLancy Louderback, purchased land in the area and founded Albany Park. Louderback named the community after his hometown of Albany, New York.
Electric streetcars came to Albany Park in 1896. Then, the extension of the Ravenswood branch of the Northwestern Elevated Railroad in December of 1907 led to a building boom. By 1930, Albany Park’s population had reached 55,000, and the community presided over the opening of numerous new religious institutions, schools, and parks.
Life in Albany Park
Albany Park is a highly walkable community with well-lighted streets and dog-friendly parks. It’s a community that attracts both families and young professionals. In a 2016 interview with Curbed Chicago, Casey Smagala said that he had dispensed with owning a car and that he rides his bike or uses the Chicago Transit Authority to get wherever he needs to go. He described Albany Park as an authentic EPCOT where people from all over Chicago come to sample cuisine from all over the world from the restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and ethnic grocery stores. Smagala had moved to Albany Park in 2008 and, at the time of the interview, he was the Director of Development and Community Engagement for the Albany Park Community Center and a planning member for the Albany Park World Fest.
